New York, New York

New York, NY — September 3, 2023

Haven’t been to NYC in far too long! In with both feet and all hands on deck in our first 24 hours. Cocktails, music, nature and lots of walking.

Tenement Museum — September 5, 2023

This is one of my favourite museums in New York. Like reading the New York Times on a Sunday in Central Park, a visit to this museum is also a must do. The tenements were home to successive waves of immigrants over time; German and Eastern European, Irish, Italian, Puerto Rican and Chinese.

Between 1864 and 1935, 7,000 people lived in the 20 apartments at the 97 Orchard St tenement. And with 25 tenements per block, this area became the most densely populated single square mile in the world with up to half a million inhabitants in its heyday.

Our most wonderful guide took us on a brief journey in the life of Jenny and Harris Levin who came to New York in 1899 fleeing Progroms in what is now Poland.

Brooklyn, NY — September 11, 2023

We spent a fabulous final day in Brooklyn with friends who took us on a 30km bike ride through parts of Brooklyn that felt like completely different worlds, to Battery Park City, and back to Brooklyn over its namesake bridge. Rain was strategically falling while we were on the ferry and while we stopped for a snack. Perfect planning! Perfect Day!
