Mayflower Bocawina National Park
And now for something completely different…back on the mainland. The park is a bit off the regular tourist track. It was originally established in 2001 to protect the Mayflower archaeological site, which we didn't see. It has since expanded its mandate to protect the surrounding forest, biodiversity and waterfalls, which we did partake in.
A crazy hot day to hike to Bocawina Falls but we were promised a reward at the end of the sweaty climb...needless to say, we are not wearing typical hiking clothes.
Incredibly thick and luscious greenery...hiding more mosquitos that we cared to come across!
A well-needed dip in lower Bocawina Falls is the encouragement to keep on going!
A different kind of scrabbling over rocks.
Hiding in upper Bocawina Falls. Can you see me?
Absolutely worth the sweaty hike!
Starting our day two zip/hike/rappel day with our new friend and uber-traveller, Gavin.
And I'm off...it's higher than it looks.
This one requires a bit more bravery!
And that's a wrap for our day in the canopy.
One final gift before departure on my cabin screen. Thankfully the katydid, a long-horned grasshopper, is on the outside! It's harmless but happy that we are on opposite sides of the screen nonetheless.

But this little cutie I don't mind seeing outside my window! A nice little grass nest protecting a little songbird's slumber.
We've traded out kayak chariots for this little plane...
Thankfully it comes with a pilot!
Flying over the North Stann Creek River which winds through the Stann Creek Valley and empties into the sea at Dangriga. Bocawina Falls where we hiked tumble down the Maya Mountains and drain into the Stann Creek is all part of the same system. Needless to say, flying was a faster way to get to Dangriga than following the river.
Ready to land in Dangriga to hop on a plane that has a bit more range to get us back home.
